![]() ![]() The loss of Simmons' personal support made it difficult for Labor to hold Calare in 1996, but instead of the expected National Party victory, the seat was won by Independent Peter Andren, well known from his former career as the local television news presenter. It had been won in 1983 by David Simmons, who served as a popular local MP for the seat until his retirement in 1996. ![]() The seat's longest period in Labor hands was during the Hawke and Keating governments from 1983 to 1996. BackgroundĬalare is the Aboriginal name for the Lachlan River which at various times has been included within the boundaries of Calare.Ĭalare has existed since 1906 and has generally been a conservative seat, occasionally being won by Labor on election to office. The electorate also includes Mudgee, Gulgong, Oberon and Canowindra.
